By traditional measures, I am a terrible business person. I don’t put profit above all else and I’m still not sure I understand a P&L. Yet, in the last few years I’ve had to figure out how to raise the money we need to grow The Curiosity Box!
I’ve learned about valuing my business, saying no to money, finding the right partners, the different strings that come attached to different types of money and most importantly how to value myself and protect the values of the business.
I am no financial expert, and my experience is just one, but I’ll happily share my high, low and oh b******s moments.

My mission is to make people’s lives better by disrupting the way we do science education by getting science happening and being discussed in every household.
I started WATS.ON shortly after having my first child in 2006. My team and I have raised over £2 million for research charities across Europe. I grew the Oxfordshire Science Festival to 100 events and 30000 participants and have run science engagement activities in hundreds of schools, in some of the most underprivileged areas of the UK.
In 2016 I launched The Curiosity Box, the UKs first science subscription box, aimed at families of 7-11yr olds. Since launch, The Curiosity Box has:
* given over 50000 children an awesome science experience and shipped over 10000 boxes
* Won the WISE Toy of the Year and the WOBA Innovation Award
* Secured contracts to provide science workshops in schools across the UK
* begun to export to the EU and Australia
…and very excitingly 53% of our subscribers are girls without any need for pink or “for girls” labels.
I am an Enterprise Advisor, working with schools to improve careers provision and regularly speak in schools to help kids see the immense scope for a career in STEM.
