Escaping the day-rates hamster wheel
When moving from a salaried job to independent self-employment most people choose to charge their services by the hour, by the day or by the session.
Day-rates sound so appealing – “I could make my monthly salary just by charging 10 days per month … and still have so much free time!”
It’s a seductive idea … until reality bites:
your rates are compared with others “like you”, so you compete on price
asking for a rate increase feels like it risks losing the client
to earn more you need to work longer
when you stop, so does your income
you’re so busy working with clients you don’t have time to look for new ones
when you finish with one client there’s a gap before your income is replaced
And the bottom line: you may be the boss, but it’s still just a job
Wouldn’t it be so much better if clients paid you for what you’re worth rather than for how long you work?
Why, then, do people rely on day rates?
Maybe it’s time to change that? Maybe it’s time to turn a job into a business?
